What's on our minds?

Stop motion animation you glorious, glorious thing!

7th March 2013

Production on the adventures of a certain boy wizard has begun and it just reminded me how truly amazing stop motion animation is. With little equipment and some dedication you can achieve great results (at least I would like to think we are achieving great results). Of course Mr. Potter and the rest of the cast would be nowhere near as engaging without the skills and talent of Hannah but I just have to live with the fact that she is awesome and I can speak Hungarian! :) Anyway, principal photography is about to wrap - only one scene remains to be shot and once it is all done I will be posting a little behind the scenes article to share some of our techniques and ideas (including a home made dolly rig for about $10).

Until next time,

Order vs. disorder or the possibility of impossibility

13th March 2013

Last Friday's Film Archive screening of a selection of Berlinale short films was an excellent reminder of what the medium is capable of.

The central theme of this year's Berlinale shorts is inspired by Masahiro Tsutani's Between Regularity and Irregularity. A short film best described as a cacophony of various beats and noises to a somewhat jarring set of fantastic images. Having seen my fair share of avant-garde and independent films over the years I dreaded the 8-minute running time when I saw the first couple of frames. And yet Tsutani finds order and rhythm in the seemingly irregular set of sounds and images and begs the question: just where does disorder end and order begin? Can narratives be formulated of the irregularities?

Short films can answer these questions and I urge everyone to seek out the slightly weird and experimental shorts and dare ask such questions.
